Highlights – The jurisdiction for the crime of aggression against Ukraine: state of play – Subcommittee on Human Rights

On 14 February at 14:30, DROI subcommittee will hold an Exchange of views on developments regarding the jurisdiction for the crime of aggression committed by Russia against Ukraine.

Guest speakers will be Mr Philippe Sands, Professor of the Public Understanding of Law at UCL and Mr Anton Korynevych, Ambassador-at-large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

The debate follows a DROI visit to Ukraine held in October 2023, where DROI Members met with victims, witnessed the scale of destruction in former occupied areas in Chernihiv and Yahidne and exchanged with authorities on accountability gaps to bring perpetrators accountable and provide reparation and redress to the victims.

In line with the European Parliament call for accountability and justice, the two prominent speakers – Mr Philippe Sands, Professor of the Public Understanding of Law at UCL and Mr Anton Korynevych, Ambassador-at-large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine – will update the audience on the progress for the creation of an international tribunal, including the issue of proceeding in absentia and the question of immunity.
