Hearings – The African Union and its human rights and democracy mechanisms – Part I – 05-12-2022 – Subcommittee on Human Rights

The Subcommittee on Human Rights, in association with the Committee on Development and the Delegation for relations with the Pan-African Parliament, will hold a public hearing on the African Union and its human rights and democracy mechanisms.
This part (Part I) of the hearing, will focus on the views of the civil society organisations.

Over the past years, the African Union (AU) has adopted various treaties and policies to ensure good governance and the protection of fundamental freedoms of African citizens, i.a. the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, African Youth Charter and the African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa.

The main purpose of the first part of this hearing will be to hear from civil society organisations about the AU human rights and democracy related mechanisms, including the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), the AU Commission on International Law (AUCIL), the AU Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC) and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC).
